I just bought 20 succulent clippings online…

I don’t live in the desert… and every succulent I’ve bought except two (that are the same species, hell yeah Haworthia Fasciata) has died. Why do I do this to myself?

I had to stop myself from going to the nearby plant nursery again today because it was only 15 degrees out. Should I save those poor plants that will inevitably freeze? Should I wait for warmer weather and healthier plants for sale? Should I trade clippings with my friends? Should I steal clippings from my neighbors planters?

If you know me, you know I spread myself entirely too thin quite often. Except this time living things are on the line ಠ_ಠ

I have a .. developing green thumb. It’s not black, not green. Brown? That’s the same color as fertile dirt right?

I feel terrible every time I kill a plant. I feel terrible about leaving behind my tiny barrel cactus at my first job after I quit. They wanted me to come into the office even though they had no power or internet after Sandy and no subways were running at all. I was planning on giving my two weeks for other reasons … so I just did it over the phone. Young me was so brazen. I still feel guilty.. about that little cactus. I hope someone from work took him home. RIP Rojo the cactus.

I also just got a Monstera Deliciosa on sale from The Sill. Garrus (my tuxedo cat) immediately ate an entire leaf a few days ago as soon as I put it on the window sill. They are supposedly toxic to cats but he is doing dandy. Little bastard.

Oh well, as some famous (maybe) gardener once said: “you don’t really know how to take care of a plant species until you’ve killed it three times”.
